Novo capítulo no Laboratório do Ódio: Netanyahu e seu garoto-propaganda Bolsonaro

(*TEXT IN ENGLISH IS BELOW)

-o fechamento do Ministério da Cultura, órgão máximo da promoção cultural brasileira, aberto logo após o fim da Ditadura Militar, como resposta à censura e repressão;

-a também extinção do Ministério do Trabalho, o que enfraquece diretamente o apoio ao trabalhador e beneficia somente o empresário;

-a retirada do direito de demarcação de terras indígenas da Funai, entregando-o ao Ministério da Agricultura, o que coloca os índios sob ameaça de um genocídio;

-a liberação do porte de armas de fogo, algo que provou-se exaustivamente amplificar a violência nas sociedades;

-a retirada de mais de oito mil médicos cubanos do programa Mais Médicos, o que deixou milhões de pessoas carentes sem assistência médica;

New chapter in the Laboratory of Hate: Netanyahu and his advertising boy Bolsonaro

by Jean Goldenbaum

Exactly three months ago I published in this same newspaper an article entitled ‘I am Jewish and Brazilian. And I shout to the world: Bolsonaro and Netanyahu do not represent me.’, on the occasion of the visit of the Israeli prime minister to Brazil for the inauguration day of the newly elected president. Well, today, albeit with great displeasure, I feel it is my duty to produce a new article on the opposite visit, the Brazilian leader to Israel.

First, let us ask ourselves: what is different between three months ago and today? Simple: until then we had only very bad expectations regarding the takeover of power by the far-right in Brazil. Today, we find day after day that such pessimistic perspectives have become pure reality. I will not waste time or computer screen listing all the horrors that have already occurred since January 1, 2019 (after all, all information is easily available to anyone who wants to find it), but I want to recall some of the worst events:

-the closure of the Ministry of Culture, the highest body of Brazilian cultural promotion, opened shortly after the end of the Military Dictatorship, in response to censorship and repression of that time;

-also the extinction of the Ministry of Labor, which directly weakens the support to the worker and benefits only the businessman;

-the withdrawal of the right to demarcate indigenous lands from Funai, turning it over to the Ministry of Agriculture, which places the Indians under threat of genocide;

-the liberation of the carrying of firearms, something that has been exhaustively proved to amplify the violence in the societies;

-the withdrawal of more than eight thousand Cuban doctors from the Mais Médicos (More Doctors) program, which left millions of people in need without medical assistance;

-all the “reformulation” of Brazilian Education, which goes clearly in the direction of a teaching that denies openness to diversity, inclusion and the most essential contemporary themes, such as gender issues.

In addition, the threat of the Social Security Reform (to be judged) is added, which obviously will benefit only the richest sections of the population, relegating the poor to an endless life of work. We can not fail to mention the evidence of the president’s family involvement with militias, executions and other crimes, as well as countless incitement to hatred and intolerance from the leader himself, his sons and the rest of his “team”.

Anyway, today it is not anymore about fear of what it could be. Everything is already there. Fascism (or perhaps Protofascism, if perhaps still in its primary phase) spreads through Brazilian society, and in this way we begin to live a dystopian time, in which Truths begin to be replaced by Untruths (from “the gay kit which the progressives want to give children at school” to “Nazism was made by the left-wing”) and the “right to hate” is legitimized by the upper echelons of the country’s rulers.

But let’s focus on the new Faustian honeymoon of the two friends that is taking place in Israel at this very moment. What are the intentions of each of the leaders and what is at stake?

Well, Netanyahu is desperate. For the first time in years, he sees the real possibility of being not only removed from office in Israel, but also indicted and convicted of various cases of corruption. His goal is clear: few days before the national elections (April 9, 2019), he wants to impress the Israeli population by displaying his newest extremist toy (a toy he also shares with the similarly tenebrous north-american president Trump, as we saw in the recent sick trip of the Brazilian leader to the USA), affirming that he has great friendship with leaders of important countries. His plan, however, is a double-edged sword, since while in the same way that the Brazilian president causes deliriums of pleasure to those who delight in his hate speech, he also causes real disgust and repugnance to those who reject him. Anyway, the near future will show us the electoral result and the consequences of the Machiavellian circus of which we are now forced to be the audience.

The Brazilian leader – who, by the way, by an unhappy schedule conflict, missed the by him ordered celebrations to the military “heroes” of the Brazilian Dictatorship (yes, the one from 1964 to 1985 that arrested around 50 thousand people, tortured around 20 thousand and officially murdered more than 400) – has basically three goals:

The first one is easy: to strengthen the ties with his right/far-right-wing partner Netanyahu, to once again satisfy Trump (directly linked to the first), and to consolidate himself as one of the most important representatives of Neo-fascism in the world (for those who want to know more about it, I suggest to research the Bolsonaro family’s “productive friendship” with Steve Bannon, one of the most destructive and threatening leaders of the far-right nationalist movement on the planet.)

The second part works almost automatically: by visiting Israel, Bolsonaro feeds the evangelical lobbying that largely elected him: thanks to their fixation in Israel and the issue of Dispensationalism (theological doctrine that says that Jesus will return when all Jews are in Israel – and “accepting” Jesus as the messiah), the fundamentalist sector of evangelicals will love to see the President plan the ground of the Holy Land and humiliate the by him and by Netanyahu unwanted Palestinians (here it should be remembered that during his campaign, Bolsonaro defended closing the Palestinian Embassy in Brazil, and a few days ago simply ignored the invitation of the Palestinian ambassador in Brazil to visit the West Bank.)

In its turn the third part is less simple and the reason is this: treading the steps – again – of his idol Trump, the Brazilian leader had promised that he would transfer the Brazilian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, making it more than clear that the possible peace negotiations with the Palestinians matter little, human rights even less, and that the one who runs and commands the Middle East is Netanyahu. The problem is that Brazil needs a decent diplomatic relationship with the Arab countries, after all a considerable part of the trading partners to which it exports are Arab. And logically these countries have already shown their displeasure regarding the Brazilian president’s courtship with Nethanyahu. (A brief example: “According to data from the National Agricultural Society, among the 25 largest importers of Brazilian chicken meat, seven are Arab countries. In addition to Saudi Arabia itself, which accounts for 14% of Brazilian exports in volume, Kuwait, Egypt, Oman, Iraq, Qatar, Yemen and Jordan also are part of it.”). Therefore, the president – as he has been doing constantly with his said and then unsaid statements and his posted and then deleted tweets – is already trying to avoid his promise, saying that what he will do is open a “commercial representation office” in Jerusalem.

Finally, the last point to be addressed in this brief article is the reception of the Brazilian Jewish community to Bolsonaro in Israel. As we know very clearly, unfortunately the Jewish community is fully divided on this subject, there being so many defenders of Bolsonaro (probably people who, in addition to not caring at all about Respect to the next, also have soul and vision narrow enough not to understand the historical catastrophic relationship between the far-right and the Jews), just as there is also the Jewish Resistance, of which the one who writes to you right now is part with great joy. Therefore it is no wonder that the Brazilian leader is received with honours, as well as with sharp protests and opposing demonstrations.

I end this article by expressing my hope for Israel – eternal Tikva – that better days will come on the ground where Jews, Muslims, Christians and others live. Days when we no longer will have disruptive, hate-propagating leaders who daily commit crimes against the Life and Dignity of others. This meeting of the current Brazilian president with the current Israeli prime minister is yet another celebration of all that is negative in humanity. But the Resistance forces are neither dead nor dormant. And May God want – whoever He may be – that on April 9th a new horizon in Israel will begin to open up to those who believe in Democracy, Human Rights and Equality among all men.

As for Brazil, I will not put false hopes here. These are dark times and the putridness of Hatred does indeed plague the country. But I put the words of one of the great thinkers and political activists of our time, the Jewish American politician Bernie Sanders (*1941). They console and inspire: “My view is that in this critical moment of history, despair is not an option. What always happens is that when millions of people at the grassroots level come together and they tell the people on top ‘You will not get away with this!’, and when they refuse to allow themselves to be divided of, when that happens, we win. Our job is: don’t let them divide us up, let’s stand together, let’s be involved in every aspect of the political process.”

Thus, I send the friends “that Brazilian hug”, the Jewish Shalom and the remembrance that in the fight for Democracy and against Fascism, nobody lets go of anyone’s hand.
