Agora é preciso cortar investimentos, flexibilizar direitos, congelar salários, assumir a doutrina do pensamento único.

New Year: Time for democratic struggle and resistance

by Adelino Francisco de Oliveira

“Memory of a time in which to fight
For your right
Is a flaw that kills
There are so many inglorious fights
They are stories that history
Any day will tell”
Gonzaguinha, Little Memory for a Time without Memory

The bell tolls! However, there is not much to celebrate. The doors of 2019 already begin to creak, waving, perhaps, to a horizon without dawn, without becoming, without anything. The new year presents itself, but the projected gazing is vague, pitiful and gloomy, taken by total perplexity. There is nothing encouraging, when the future that is announced shows itself only as dystopia.

The elected governments, faithful to an already failed neoliberal book, rush to proclaim their ignoble guidelines, and decree the end of the age of rights. Now it is necessary to cut investments, flexibilize rights, freeze salaries, put on the single thought doctrine. As horsemen of a contemporary version of the apocalypse, bluntly and with no half words, the masters of power want to impose and perpetuate a time of penury, of material and spiritual scarcity. In an inverted prophetism, they emphasize the Hobbesian concept “Homo homini lupus est” (‘Man is wolf to man.’). They say loud and clear that there is no more space for solidarity, for tolerance, for diversity, for justice, for rights. The new year belongs to the unfeeling ones.

The insanity of the old leaders, with their promises (threats) for the new year, rises against all hope. The rotten dynamics of exploitation and oppression appear, in discourses in favor of capital, transvestite under the sign of modernization, of progress. With the eminent prospect of a scorched earth scenario where the country will be handed over to the detriment of the dignity of the people themselves, to the plunder of financial capital, of international economic forces, there is no place or project for the poor, the workers.

Perhaps the only certainty, before the difficult prognosis for the new year, is the urgent task of starting over. The coming year must be precisely a fruitful time of recommencement, composing a vast movement of democratic struggle and resistance. The reference inspiration must then be the pedagogy of hope, the contribution of the monumental Freirean legacy (Paulo Freire, Brazilian educator and philosopher). In the expectation of the new year, it is necessary, as a historical requirement, to face the challenge of returning to the bases of society, disputing spaces of formation, meeting and articulation, from the organization of small nuclei, in order to reconstruct the possibilities of a democratic and popular project for Brazil. It will be fundamental that we continue together, with hope always!
