(*TEXT IN ENGLISH IS BELOW)

Me sinto parte destes povos e destas culturas. Admiro-as e as vivo.

Vamos a eles.

I’m Jewish and Brazilian. And I shout to the world: Bolsonaro and Netanyahu do not represent me!

Clarifications and thoughts on religions, Israel, Brazil and the neofascism that plagues the world in the 21st century.

by Jean Goldenbaum

Where to start? Lasts days of the year of 2018, tragedy announced, planned catastrophe in Brazil. It’s happening. An elected fascist president, chosen by tens of millions, openly and without apology. Could the circus be even more horrendous than we imagined? For some, it was proved that yes. In order to celebrate the victory of hatred and the harbinger of oppression and repression, there is nothing better than the presence of another ace of domination, abuse, and violence. Under the eyes of the world – and the shame of others -, yesterday (Dec. 28th) in Rio de Janeiro the new President of Brazil and the Prime Minister of Israel, who came to the presidential inauguration, hugged each other and gazed at each other’s pleasure at oppressing, subjugating, and destroying.

I have been a Jew and a Brazilian since I was born. Ethnicity, citizenship, identity and identification. I feel part of these people and these cultures. I am an artist and a researcher, I work in a Jewish institution. And although I celebrate in my Music diverse cultures – because I love pluralism -, the Jewish and Brazilian ones have comprehensively special spaces in my creation. I admire them and live them. Therefore, as I have been doing over the years, today I will not take an apathetic or passive attitude towards this, which is one of the worst moments for the good Brazilians and for the good Jews. And when I say ‘good’, I mean something very simple: I mean people who choose to respect their neighbor regardless of ethnicity, skin color, sexual orientation, religion, social status and so on. I speak of people who build rather than destroy, who help rather than oppress, who celebrate all parts of life rather than seek to cut off the parts they dislike. I speak of those who free themselves from their selfishness and put themselves in favor of humanity and the conviviality with both the same and the different.

I will be direct and objective: in my opinion, Bolsonaro is the worst thing that has ever happened to Brazil and Netanyahu the worst that has ever happened to Israel. Horrible leaders have undoubtedly passed, but these surpass all. While the first is the utmost incorporation of Neofascism, entitled to all its characteristics, the second is the leader who further distanced the Middle East from the possibility of peace and who most shamed the Jews with his settlements in the West Bank and his fully racist laws and actions against the Palestinians, in addition to his accusations of corruption.

But let us go to the present point in itself. I believe I can contribute to the reader’s knowledge by bringing you some realities that may not yet be of your knowledge. Why did Netanyahu consider it so important to travel to Brazil (for the first time!) And establish his closeness and partnership with Bolsonaro? What unites the monsters? Besides sociopathy (or psychopathy?) that leads to the uncontrollable desire for domination, we can list practical points. The answer, although at first glance complex, is quite simple: Bolsonaro, as a fascist symbol of contemporaneity, follows the parameters of 21st-century Neofascism to the letter. One of these parameters is the paradoxical “defense” of the State of Israel by the fascists. It is paradoxical because anyone who knows the minimum of world history knows that the far-right has always hated and will hate the Jews, culminating in Hitler. Why then do the fascists bring “friendship” with the Jews into their speech? For various reasons. Let’s go to them.

In the country where I live, Germany, the neo-Nazi party (AfD) focuses its hatred on those it regards as its main enemies at the moment, the Muslims. This is because the immigration of Muslims in Europe has been immense in recent years and thus the old Nazi formula ‘They will destroy our country and steal our place!’ could be triggered again (for more information on this immigration, I suggest this 2016 article of mine). Combining this with the fact that, thanks to the Holocaust, public opinion today would not accept absolutely any type of open attack against Jews in Germany, AfD adopts this position: pro-Israel and against Muslims. Of course, the fact that Israel is now led by right-wing leaders also works perfectly with this equation.

In the United States, the lunatic and megalomaniacal Trump adopts the same stance toward Muslims (not forgetting, of course, to distill his hatred also at Latinos, who likewise constitute a large part of the foreign and immigrant population). In its particular case, besides the factor of evangelical lobbying (which we will see later in this article), Islamophobia also occurs because it is essential that the White House pleases and maintains good relations with the conservative American Jewish donors, who oppose the majority of the American Jewish community, which is Democrat.

In Brazil the path is different, but the result is the same. Bolsonaro clings to questions that he puts as “family values” (which are fundamentally homophobic), which appeal to and attract much of the country’s evangelical population. We know that it was largely thanks to his hatred of the LGBT community that he garnered the votes of the absolute majority of evangelicals, something that was essential to his election. Although there is a small percentage of Muslims in Brazil and there is no reason why the fascists attack them (at least for now), what counts in this case is the fact that it is interesting to the evangelical community a president who vilifies the Muslims who live in the region of Israel (including Gaza and the West Bank). This is because of religious reasons: many evangelicals believe that Jesus will return when all the Jews are in Israel – and “accept” Jesus as the messiah – that is, without Muslims hindering the way. This Christian theological and eschatological doctrine is called Dispensationalism and permeates much of the Brazilian and world evangelical community. Thus, the recipe was perfect for Bolsonaro: he pleases his fan/idol Trump, aligns himself with other European fascist movements (by the way, AfD was the only major German party to congratulate him on his victory) and receives majoritarian support of the Brazilian evangelical community.

Netanyahu, on the other hand, does not seem to have anything against the LGBT community and cares little for Muslim immigration in Europe and the US. But his interest is to fight Muslims in loco, in Israel. Thus, he has been building over the years an extremely racist policy against the Palestinians, and destroying all possibilities of reaching a peace agreement. Netanyahu’s main obsession in his leadership has been the establishment of settlements in the West Bank, that is, invasion and occupation of Palestinian lands.

From here everything intertwines in perfect sense: Trump decides to move the US embassy to Jerusalem, sending a very clear message to the Palestinians that he and Netanyahu do what they want and are in full command. In his turn, the Brazilian president, the little brother, immediately promises to copy Big Brother and move the Brazilian embassy as well. Added to all this is the fact that much of the investment for the construction of Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands comes from donations from evangelicals. And so the novel is drawn between fascists and part of the Jews.

As a Jew, representative of this people, it is essential for me to make clear to the dear reader that Netanyahu is not synonymous with Jew and nor synonymous with Israel. Quite the opposite. Israel is divided in two, between his supporters and the opposition, just as Brazil is divided and just the Brazilian Jewish community is divided. The Jewish people, like any other people in the world, are made up of good and bad people, conscious and unconscious, just and unjust. Today the world lives in a dark period, where it seems that the bad ones do indeed have more strength than the good ones. The current world leaders are evidence of this and all the negativities they inspire and legitimize reflect in today’s reality. Just over 20 years ago we were about to see peace between Jews and Palestinians be realized by Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat, until the first being brutally murdered by a far-right Israeli. Today we are farther than ever from any agreement. Ten years ago the US elected the first black president, and today there is a need for a movement that “reminds” people that Black Lives Matter’. Brazil was seen in the world as a free and open country, a symbol of pluralism and a beautiful amalgam of ethnicities and cultures. Today we have one of the most horrendous leaders in the world in terms of Freedom, Tolerance and Human Rights.

But we will not stop fighting. And we will not lose hope. Trump will leave a terrible legacy, but Bernie Sanders (Jew, by the way) is marvelously revolutionizing the political thought of the world in a way that humanity still does not realize, but will realize at some moment. In Israel the days of Netanyahu will reach the end possibly soon (he has several counts of corruption and has just called early national elections, since he can not run the country without necessary support on the parliament). As for Brazil, I confess that it is difficult to be hopeful today because it seems that the worst is yet to come (the preludes have already been terrible – we will not forget Marielle, Moa do Katendê, Reinaldo Pataxó, Celestino e Silva, MST leaders and others murdered, executed). But we will remain in the fight.

Before closing, I think it fits here a short list of final considerations and direct messages:

1. A Message from conscious and good Jews to the fascists: we do not accept your “friendship” for two reasons: firstly because we know that fascism always walks alongside anti-Semitism. The fascist hates the Jew in the same way that he hates the Muslim, even though in the present day he opens widely hatred to one and disguise hatred to the other according to his momentary convienience. And second reason: even if you really wanted to be our friends, we would not accept it, for the Jew who lives the essence of Judaism stands as a resistance to any kind of oppression, whether against him or against others. (In passing: kudos to the German Jewish community that published in 2018 an open letter positioning itself entirely against AfD.)

2. To the Brazilian Jews who embraced fascism: there have always been people like you in our community. You will pass. The good ones will be in History. Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Stefan Zweig, Erich Fromm, Albert Einstein, Rene Cassin, Bernie Sanders and many others carry the Jewish Soul of Democracy, Respect for the Next, and Human Rights. Hitler’s Jewish friends (who actually existed) either ended up in the gas chambers, or simply ended their lives guilty and ashamed.

3. To Brazilian Jews who think that dispensational evangelicals want the good for the Jews: did millennia of arduous path have not been enough for you to learn? If things continue like this, Israel will be seized by evangelical churches long before the mosques that you fear so much. Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of North American J-Street, one of the leading liberal pro-Israel and pro-Peace in the Middle East institutions, warned that Jews should “distrust seeking help from those who are playing with our lives in order to promote their religious and ideological purposes”.

4. To all who see the flag of Israel next to the president of Brazil: please understand that to a great extent this is the action of evangelicals. Many even call themselves Jews – see the carnival of the “pharaonic bishop” who “rebuilt” the “temple of Solomon” in Sao Paulo and dresses as biblical Aaron…
5. The term ‘evangelicals’ has often appeared in this text. I write here the same premise I wrote above: in all peoples or groups there are good and bad people. I have evangelical friends who are wonderful people and would never defend a politician who preaches hatred. I very much hope that these evangelicals will grow and become a majority in their midst.

Finally, in conclusion, I can only reiterate that my main purpose in this text is to clearly and indubitably record that these leaders not only do not represent me as a Jew and a Brazilian, but much more than that, they are opposed to everything that I have always valued and cultivated in my Judaism and my Brazilianness. I write in first person singular, for I can only speak for myself. But I know this first person is plural. There are tens of millions of Brazilians and millions of Jews sailing this same boat. And we are united. We are the Resistance, we are the voice of Love against Hate and we will not fail to manifest as long as there is a single Indian, quilombola (descendants of slaves), LGBT, poor, refugee or Palestinian being oppressed. To those on our side, I send that Brazilian hug and the eternal Jewish Shalom.
